You absolutely need a verb to describe the action of a sentence and a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://baalish.com/mr_rahman/grammar-how-to-find-the-verb-of-a-sentence">subject </a>that does that action.<blockquote>If you see 2 or more parts of a sentence and are confused about which one is subject, try to DELETE those parts and see which one makes the sentence lose its meaning and is NECESSARY.That's the subject!</blockquote>Example:The students want to help decorate for prom.We can see that the main verb here in the sentence is "want". And we find that it is "The students" that want to decorate for prom.So, the subject here is "The students".A sentence can have multiple clauses (or parts) to make a complete thought. But, remember that a verb will always have a corresponding subject!<blockquote>Sometimes, there can be modifiers that enhance the meaning of the sentence, and they might make it harder to find the subject.</blockquote>Example: A jar of roasted red beans sits on the table.Here, the subject is "jar" and its verb is "sits". But they are separated by a prepositional phrase "of roasted red beans".We find that even when we DELETE the phrase "of roasted red beans" the sentence still makes sense:A jar sits on the table.But when we DELETE "jar" the sentence loses its meaning:A ___ of roasted red beans sits on the table.This is why it isn't red beans which is the subject but jar.<h3>So, when in doubt, try to DELETE either of the phrases or words to see which on is NECESSARY.</h3>
